What happened: The league moved the 2026 cutdown from its recent Tuesday slot to Sunday, Aug. 30. Waiver claims are due Monday at 1 p.m. ET, followed by practice-squad submissions at 6 p.m.
Why it matters: The compressed schedule gives front offices less time to explore trades before releasing players. Those with fewer than four accrued seasons enter waivers, while more experienced veterans become free agents immediately.
By the numbers: With 32 clubs allowed up to 90 players before cutdown, the reduction to 53 can eliminate as many as 1,184 active-roster spots leaguewide. Practice squads can carry 16 players, or 17 with an eligible International Player Pathway participant.
