What happened: The penalty stems from a violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy. Jones may practice this week and play in the preseason finale before the ban takes effect.

Why it matters: Jones has spent two seasons on Minnesota's practice squad and made one regular-season appearance. His roster bid now coincides with the Vikings' final cutdown.

What to watch: Watch whether Minnesota includes Jones on its initial 53-man roster before Sunday's deadline.
