What happened: The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters announced Sunday that the club has formally approved posting right-handed pitcher Hiromi Itoh to Major League Baseball teams. The decision initiates the formal posting process for the Japanese starter to negotiate a contract across the majors.

Why it matters: Itoh becomes the latest prominent Japanese pitcher to transition to North American baseball through the posting system. His availability introduces an experienced starting arm to the winter market for major-league rotations.

What to watch: Major-league clubs will have an exclusive negotiating window to finalize terms once the posting is formally opened.
