What happened: Micah Nori said he does not think starting Ja and Dame together makes sense right now because of defense. He said Portland could still open the preseason by trying the pairing to see what it looks like.

Why it matters: The choice will shape how the Trail Blazers balance offense and defense entering the 2026-27 season. Portland opens the regular season Oct. 21 against Phoenix, giving Nori a short runway to sort out his first starting group.

What to watch: The preseason opener should show whether Nori treats the pairing as a one-game look or a serious rotation option. Portland's early exhibition lineups will offer the next clue on how he wants to build the backcourt.
