What happened: The San Diego Padres selected right-hander Coleman Borthwick out of South Walton High School in Florida with the 21st overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. The selection was part of the draft's opening round broadcast.

Why it matters: The pick adds high-velocity pitching depth to San Diego's farm system as the front office simultaneously weighs deadline decisions on the major-league roster, including closer Mason Miller and left-hander Adrian Morejon. San Diego enters the weekend at 46-48 and on a two-game losing streak.

By the numbers: Borthwick profiles as a right-hander with a fastball reaching up to 100 mph, per scouting reaction to the selection.

What to watch: Borthwick moves into San Diego's minor-league pipeline following Saturday's draft.
