What happened: Philadelphia enters the 2027 offseason with veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto locked into two more guaranteed years at $15 million annually following the worst offensive campaign of his career. With internal backups Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchan offering limited production and top catching prospect Alirio Ferrebus still developing at Single-A Clearwater, the club faces a thin depth chart behind its soon-to-be 36-year-old starter. Low-cost free-agent targets include defensive-minded veteran Jake Rogers and bounce-back candidate Jonah Heim, while top available starter Ryan Jeffers is expected to command a primary role elsewhere.

Why it matters: Closing the National League gap with the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers requires stabilizing the lineup after Philadelphia's two-year commitment to Realmuto following its missed pursuit of Bo Bichette. Because the pitching staff and front office remain committed to Realmuto handling the bulk of the workload, the front office is prioritizing a reliable defender capable of spot-starting if injuries strike rather than pursuing a high-priced starter.

What to watch: Philadelphia will evaluate minor-league and league-minimum contract options for veteran backup catchers as the winter market opens ahead of 2027 spring training.
