What happened: Pittsburgh finished 82-80 and missed the postseason. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller floated Milwaukee closer Trevor Megill as the 2027 upgrade, with minor-league talent going back to the Brewers.

Why it matters: Mason Montgomery and Gregory Soto combined for 34 saves without locking down the ninth. Montgomery posted a 2.88 ERA and fits better in an eighth-inning setup role behind a proven closer. Adding Megill would address the gap between a winning record and an October berth.

By the numbers: Megill: 81 saves over last three seasons, All-Star, 2.63 ERA in 2026. Pirates: Montgomery 2.88 ERA; Montgomery and Soto combined for 34 saves. Team record: 82-80.

What to watch: Watch Milwaukee's offseason bullpen plans and Pittsburgh's non-tender decisions into November.
