Prates says deal set to challenge Makhachev for UFC title

Silva says one clean shot ends the champion's reign

What happened: Carlos Prates said he has an agreement with the UFC to fight welterweight champion Islam Makhachev next, with date and location still to be set. Jean Silva backed his teammate to return the 170-pound belt to Brazil on the power of his right hand.

Why it matters: Prates earned the shot with finishes over former champions Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena. Makhachev took the belt from Della Maddalena by decision and defended it against Ian Machado Garry, making power the clear stylistic question.

By the numbers: Jean Silva is 7-1 in the UFC after a September finish of Jose Delgado. Carlos Prates holds consecutive finishes over Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena. Islam Makhachev holds a decision win over Della Maddalena and a defense against Ian Machado Garry.

What to watch: UFC confirmation of date and location is the next step, with a Jan. 30 Toronto slot discussed as a possible landing spot.
