What happened: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted on X that the Washington Wizards secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, while the Washington Commanders are slated to host the 2027 NFL Draft. The lottery order announced top four picks as Wizards, Jazz, Grizzlies and Bulls. Rapoport's post tied the two Washington franchises' news together.

Why it matters: The Wizards' top pick ends years of lottery frustration in D.C. and could be franchise-altering for a rebuilding roster. Pairing that with the Commanders hosting the 2027 NFL Draft amplifies Washington's national sports footprint heading into the 2026 NFL offseason. For the Commanders, draft-host status is a marketing and civic win as the franchise continues its post-sale rebuild.

What to watch: Watch for Wizards pre-draft workouts and mock-draft consensus on the No. 1 selection ahead of June's NBA Draft. On the NFL side, expect formal venue and event details for the 2027 Draft to roll out alongside the May 14 NFL schedule release.
