What happened: Detroit is closing in on a seven-year extension with Alex DeBrincat, per Emily Kaplan. The development comes with the game against New Jersey final at 5-4.

Why it matters: Detroit faces other roster decisions during the regular season. Keeping DeBrincat would settle one core spot and define the forward group moving forward.

What to watch: Next is whether talks reach an official agreement and terms are disclosed.
