What happened: Mercedes driver George Russell crashed out of the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race after taking an early lead. Starting from the front row on a wet Marina Bay track, he overtook pole-sitter Max Verstappen but lost control after running slightly wide. Russell took responsibility for the incident, calling it his own mistake.

Why it matters: The retirement cost Mercedes valuable sprint points and compromised Russell's preparation for standard qualifying. He was already facing a grid penalty for the main race following an engine change. Verstappen inherited the lead following the crash.

By the numbers: Verstappen has won the last two races from pole position.

What to watch: The standard qualifying session follows the sprint on Saturday. Russell will start Sunday's Grand Prix from the back of the grid.
