What happened: The sisters return to New York as a team after Serena's four-year absence from the tournament. Venus also holds a wild card in singles.

Why it matters: The entry extends Serena's US Open run beyond mixed doubles and puts Venus in a second draw. It follows their aborted Wimbledon reunion in July.

By the numbers: The sisters have won 14 major women's doubles titles together, including US Open championships in 1999 and 2009.

What to watch: The women's doubles draw will determine their opening-round opponents and path through New York.
