What happened: McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said Lando Norris earned the call to pass Oscar Piastri in the United States Grand Prix on adaptability. The teammates started side by side on the fourth row at Circuit of the Americas after trailing Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari in Q3. Piastri dropped about one second across the opening seven laps before the order was switched.

Why it matters: The call kept McLaren from losing time with both cars stuck in the same window early. It extends management of its drivers after the Singapore sprint collision into Austin. Norris finished fifth and Piastri seventh while Kimi Antonelli won from pole.

By the numbers: Antonelli won from pole ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton finished fourth, Norris fifth and Piastri seventh at Circuit of the Americas. In qualifying, Antonelli and Verstappen locked out the front row with Isack Hadjar third.

What to watch: McLaren heads into the next round of the triple-header with the internal order call settled. Attention turns to whether improved qualifying pace puts both cars back with the lead group.
