Steph Curry limps off, avoids serious injury at Warriors practice

Sprained right ankle days before Lakers opener

What happened: Curry slipped making a move on De'Anthony Melton about 45 minutes into Sunday's open practice at Chase Center and limped to the locker room favoring his right leg. The team said afterward it was a sprained right ankle, not the right knee. Steve Kerr said Curry was in good spirits in the training room.

Why it matters: At 38, Curry is entering his 18th season with Golden State managing his workload through a cautious ramp-up. He played under 18 minutes per preseason game with reduced high-intensity work. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are rehabbing leg injuries while Kristaps Porzingis has missed three weeks with illness, thinning the rotation.

By the numbers: Curry averaged 13 points while shooting 20-of-45 from the field (44 percent) and 13-of-31 from three (41.9 percent) in preseason play.

What to watch: An official status update is expected before Wednesday's regular-season opener in Los Angeles against the same Lakers matchup that already has Curry TBD with a right-ankle tweak.
