What happened: Max Verstappen gained track position over Charles Leclerc on Lap 28 of the Mexico City Grand Prix as both drivers pitted simultaneously. Leclerc entered pit lane ahead but remained stationary to serve a five-second time penalty before mechanics touched the car. Verstappen completed a clean pit stop to exit ahead, leaving Leclerc to rejoin the circuit in sixth position.

Why it matters: The lost track position disrupted Ferrari's pursuit of a podium sweep after Leclerc had edged Verstappen by 0.045 seconds during Saturday's initial qualifying runs. Serving the penalty in traffic dropped Leclerc behind rival machinery at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, leaving him forced to work back through midfield runners. The exchange elevated Verstappen directly into podium contention while compromising Leclerc's stint strategy.

What to watch: Verstappen defends his newly gained position while Leclerc attempts to clear traffic and recover toward the front of the field across the remaining 43 laps.
