What happened: Catcher Vahn Lackey, whom the White Sox had strongly considered with their pick, slid instead to the Minnesota Twins. The fall came right after the Rays took shortstop Grady Emerson with the No. 2 pick, reshuffling the board behind them.

Why it matters: Minnesota walks away with a catching prospect it wasn't projected to get, adding depth to a farm system while the big-league club sits 46-49 and has dropped two straight. Chicago instead passes on Lackey and goes a different direction with its own selection.

What to watch: Watch for confirmation of Lackey's exact draft slot and bonus terms as the Twins finalize the pick.
