What happened: Day 2 follows Sept. 29 openers carried on NBC and Peacock. Game 1 winners can clinch advancement while Game 1 losers play to extend their season.

Why it matters: Padres took a 1-0 lead over Chicago to move one win from the next round. New York also seized early control against Boston behind Ben Rice's two-homer night.

By the numbers: Padres 8, Cubs 0: Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a first-pitch leadoff homer, Manny Machado homered, and Chicago managed three hits in the shutout with Michael King carrying a no-hit bid into the seventh. Yankees led Boston 9-0: Rice hit two home runs including a grand slam.

What to watch: Game 2 results determine whether the round ends in sweeps or requires decisive Game 3s. Winning teams will set their next-round pitching plans after the finals.
