What happened: Luke Witkowski has begun his first season in the Czech Extraliga after previous stops in Finland and Sweden. The former defenseman and part-time winger last played in North America during the 2022-23 season.

Why it matters: The move extends a career built largely on defensive depth and physicality. His NHL tenure included spells with the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning, plus a 10-game suspension stemming from an altercation with Matthew Tkachuk and the Calgary Flames.

By the numbers: Witkowski recorded 13 points across 131 NHL games. He added 61 points with a plus-36 rating in 346 AHL appearances.

What to watch: His role with HC Kometa Brno will come into focus as the Czech Extraliga season develops.
