What happened: Yahoo Sports raised the possibility Friday that the Hurricanes could eventually leave conference play and operate as an independent program alongside Notre Dame.

Why it matters: Operating without a conference affiliation allows a program to control its own scheduling and media rights rather than sharing revenue across a league. Notre Dame has long used that structure to maintain national scheduling flexibility while negotiating standalone broadcast agreements.

What to watch: Any formal realignment move would require institutional approval and negotiations over existing conference exit terms.
