What happened: The New York Yankees appointed outfielder Spencer Jones to serve as their 27th man prior to Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader. New York previously optioned the prospect to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on July 4.

Why it matters: The designation allows the club to carry an extra player for the twin bill without making a corresponding active roster move. The addition provides the team with extra outfield depth across the two contests.

By the numbers: The New York Yankees lead the series 2-0. The game is in progress with the score Pittsburgh Pirates 2, New York Yankees 0. New York holds a 51-41 record this season.

What to watch: The organization will evaluate its roster configuration following the conclusion of the doubleheader.
