What happened: San Francisco announced the in-game injury designation for its starting running back during Sunday's regular-season contest.

Why it matters: An extended absence would test the 49ers' offensive depth after McCaffrey addressed taking on extra slot work amid wide receiver injuries earlier this week. Managing his workload also carries weight after he dealt with muscle tightness in August.

What to watch: The 49ers will update McCaffrey's status over the remainder of the contest and after the game.
