What happened: San Francisco acquired Jones from New Orleans in an Aug. 24 player-for-player trade. Jones had signed with the Saints on Aug. 7.

Why it matters: The move removes the veteran depth San Francisco added days earlier and puts Jones back on the market before the 2026 regular season. New Orleans had already converted his brief stint into running-back depth.

By the numbers: Jones has recorded 746 tackles, 53 passes defended, 13 interceptions and 12 sacks across 128 career games, including 91 starts. He made 17 appearances and totaled 17 tackles in 2025.

What to watch: Watch for Jones' next destination and whether San Francisco makes another move at linebacker.
