What happened: The agreement follows a July 30 workout as San Francisco evaluated veteran backfield depth. Herbert brings 416 career carries and 54 receptions to the preseason roster.

Why it matters: The addition gives San Francisco another experienced option during training-camp competition. Herbert's production as a runner and receiver broadens the choices available before roster cuts.

What to watch: Herbert's preseason workload will indicate where he stands in the backfield rotation. His roster status will be decided during final cuts.
