What happened: Kimi Antonelli set the fastest time ahead of Max Verstappen in final practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The last session before qualifying put Mercedes and Red Bull at the front of the order heading into the pole shootout.

Why it matters: FP3 changed the picture after Mercedes' rough Friday at Sepang, when the upgraded W17 ran second, fifth, seventh and eighth across the earlier sessions. Verstappen staying close kept Red Bull in the mix for pole in a weekend already altered by the calendar move that shifted Bahrain to Malaysia.

By the numbers: Antonelli's margin over Verstappen was nearly three tenths in FP3. Mercedes' upgraded W17 had finished 2nd, 5th, 7th and 8th across Friday's sessions before topping final practice.

What to watch: Qualifying later Saturday will show whether Mercedes converts practice pace into pole or Red Bull flips the order. The race will test whether that one-lap edge carries into a full stint at Sepang.
