What happened: Kimi Antonelli locked up the top spot on his opening Q3 run in Austin, clearing Red Bull teammates Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar by roughly two tenths of a second after few frontrunners improved on their second attempts. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed the top five on the grid ahead of sixth-place qualifier George Russell.

Why it matters: Starting from P1 gives Antonelli a shot to clinch the World Championship this weekend while pursuing Sebastian Vettel's benchmark. Red Bull placed both cars in the top three to challenge from the opening corners, while McLaren starts further back in seventh and eighth.

By the numbers: Antonelli pole lap: 1:34.035 (7th pole of 2026, ~0.2s clear of P2). Starting grid: P1 Antonelli, P2 Verstappen, P3 Hadjar, P4 Leclerc, P5 Hamilton, P6 Russell, P7-P8 McLaren.

What to watch: Antonelli leads Verstappen and Hadjar into the steep Turn 1 climb when the United States Grand Prix gets underway in Austin.
