What happened: Arizona State hired Dave Hakstol as head coach of Sun Devil Hockey without an interim tag and mutually agreed to part ways with Greg Powers. Powers had been placed on administrative leave after team-mandated exercises left St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich on life support with heat stroke.

Why it matters: Bringing in Hakstol gives the Tempe program an experienced bench boss to take over operations immediately. Removing the interim label establishes permanent leadership following the workout crisis.

What to watch: Hakstol steps in immediately to lead Arizona State's hockey program in Tempe.
