What happened: The Houston Astros hired Randy Flores as the franchise's 15th general manager. Flores joins Houston after spending the last eight seasons as the Cardinals' assistant general manager overseeing amateur and professional acquisition.

Why it matters: Flores fills the front-office opening created when Houston dismissed Dana Brown in August. His background directing scouting and talent acquisition addresses a critical need as the club retools its roster.

What to watch: Flores will now evaluate Houston's baseball operations staff and begin preparations for the upcoming winter meetings and free agency.
