What happened: The Astros published a feature tracing Tatsuya Imai's route from an elite Koshien high school baseball championship in Japan to signing with Houston as a free agent. The team frames him as the first Japanese free-agent signing in

Why it matters: The profile lands as Houston works its pitching staff ahead of the trade deadline, having already dealt Lance McCullers and Nick Gordon to Milwaukee this week. Imai's international pedigree adds a data point to the Astros' rotation-building efforts this summer.

By the numbers: Houston enters at 44-46 this season, on a one-game losing streak after going 1-4 in its last five, averaging 4.6 runs scored against 5.0 allowed.

What to watch: The Astros host the Orioles next, a game that had not yet started as of Friday, with Houston and Baltimore scoreless.
