What happened: The Athletics announced Cam Castro as their general manager, hiring him away from the Milwaukee Brewers. Castro will work under new president of baseball operations Taylor Smith, per Ken Rosenthal.

Why it matters: The hire fills the general manager post beneath Smith, who took over baseball operations this offseason. It also pulls an executive from the club that just won the World Series.

What to watch: The Athletics' first moves under the new front office come as the MLB labor deal expires Dec. 1 with the salary cap unresolved.
