What happened: Munson died in a plane crash on Aug. 2, 1979, at age 32.

Why it matters: Munson became the Yankees’ first captain since Lou Gehrig when he received the title in 1976. He spent his entire 11-season career with the club.

By the numbers: Munson won the 1970 AL Rookie of the Year and 1976 AL MVP awards and earned seven All-Star selections.
