What happened: Yamamoto needed 45 pitches to get through Milwaukee's order once and reached 61 pitches with two outs in the third. Brice Turang drew a six-pitch walk and William Contreras battled seven pitches before Jake Bauers fouled off nine pitches in a 12-pitch walk. The same Christian Yelich who lined the go-ahead single singled up the middle one batter later to end the start.

Why it matters: Milwaukee reversed last October's chase-heavy approach by taking early and spoiling late for four swinging misses against 12 called strikes. The grind removed a pitcher who threw a 111-pitch complete game against Milwaukee in last year's NLCS. Leaving in the third forced the Los Angeles Dodgers to

By the numbers: Yamamoto: 75 pitches, 35 in zone, 46 strikes and 29 balls across 14 batters with one strikeout and two walks. Milwaukee fouled off 19 pitches, nine by Bauers in one trip. Jackson Chourio struck out on three pitches, and the 12-pitch walk was the longest plate appearance any batter has taken against Yamamoto.

What to watch: Milwaukee carries momentum into Game 3 with Los Angeles having burned early bullpen innings. Los Angeles needs length from its next starter to reset relief availability.
