What happened: Cleveland used a return designation, preserving Gabriel’s eligibility to rejoin the roster later this season. He did not throw during the open portion of Saturday’s quarterback-receiver drill.

Why it matters: The transaction removes Gabriel from Cleveland’s early-season quarterback mix and opens an active-roster spot. Trade interest that surfaced before the roster deadline now faces a changed availability picture.

What to watch: Watch for Cleveland to open his practice window after the mandatory absence and decide whether to activate him.
