What happened: Ohio State safety Caleb Downs drew high praise from Fox's Joel Klatt, who called him the 'smartest college defender' covered and an 'All-Pro waiting in the wings.' Multiple NFL executives compare him to Kyle Hamilton and Earl Thomas, labeling him the best safety prospect since those stars. A Dolphins podcast urges Miami to rank him atop their 2026 draft board.

Why it matters: Downs' elite accolades, including the 2025 Lott Trophy and Jim Thorpe Award, make him a consensus top-10 talent amid Miami's secondary questions. Elite safeties like Hamilton deliver immediate impact, boosting playoff contenders like the Dolphins.

By the numbers: Awards: Lott Trophy (2025), Jim Thorpe Award (2025), 2x Unanimous All-American, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year (2025). PFF Grades: 89.6 coverage, 86.4 run defense; 52.6 passer rating targeted. Draft to be picked 5th overall (NoVig/BetOnline). Injury: Prior torn meniscus, degenerative ACL concerns.

What to watch: Watch for Dolphins' pre-draft visits with Downs and updated mock drafts, as top-10 projection holds despite minor medical flags.
