What happened: The solo drive to left-center produced the game's first run in the top of the first inning. It came three days after Caminero hit No. 38.

Why it matters: The latest homer raises the target for every remaining challenger in the AL race. With the regular season in its final month, the gap has less time to close.

By the numbers: 39 home runs; three from Aug. 30 through Sept. 8; one shy of 40.

What to watch: Caminero's next homer would make him the first AL hitter to reach 40 this season.
