What happened: Cleveland elevated Brendon Yu within its basketball operations department Friday. The move follows Brandon Weems' promotion to general manager earlier the same day.

Why it matters: The Cavaliers are reshaping their leadership group ahead of the 2026-27 season after a burst of executive changes. That structure will help guide decisions around a roster that recently kept Donovan Mitchell on a $273 million max extension and James Harden on a new three-year, $97 million contract.

By the numbers: Mitchell's max extension was finalized Sept. 15, and Harden's new deal became official Sept. 8 at $97 million over three years. Yu's promotion is one of at least three Cleveland basketball-operations changes announced Sept. 18, alongside Weems' GM promotion and Dashiell Flynn's appointment as CTO of basketball operations.

What to watch: The next signal is whether Cleveland's Sept. 18 reshuffle ends here or extends deeper into the front office before camp. Attention then turns back to roster planning for the 2026-27 season.
