What happened: Chelsea agreed to a pre-arranged transfer for U.S. youth international Benji Flowers, according to reports. The winger will join the Premier League club upon turning 18, while FC Dallas signed him to a first-team contract in the interim.

Why it matters: The transaction structure financially incentivizes FC Dallas to provide the teenager with senior soccer minutes prior to his departure. Additional payouts trigger based on domestic appearances and youth national team milestones.

By the numbers: The potential $10 million package surpasses the up-to-$5 million deal the Philadelphia Union received from Manchester City for Cavan Sullivan. Chelsea previously acquired American defender Matt Miazga from Red Bull New York in 2016.

What to watch: Flowers will continue his development in the FC Dallas system, where he debuted for the MLS Next Pro second team in March, as he awaits the English move.
