What happened: Columbus sent Herrera onto the pitch in place of Zaroury before the 2026 U.S. Open Cup final went to a penalty tiebreaker. The Crew converted three of their first four attempts from the spot but fell short of the trophy in the shootout.

Why it matters: The defeat ends the Crew's 2026 U.S. Open Cup campaign in the championship match after Courtois took over prior to the quarterfinal stage. Midgame changes involving the same personnel featured throughout the knockout run, including when Herrera replaced Habroune in the Crew quarterfinal.

What to watch: With its Open Cup run concluded, Columbus turns its attention to the 2026 MLS postseason.
