What happened: Alexander Volkov earned Daniel Cormier's backing for the next heavyweight title shot after UFC 333. Volkov submitted Rizvan Kuniev in the third round at Etihad Arena.

Why it matters: The heavyweight queue has lacked a clear next challenger. Volkov moved to 41-11-0 with the finish, putting a veteran contender in line for a championship bout.

By the numbers: Alexander Volkov: 41-11-0; UFC 333: def. Rizvan Kuniev by submission, R3 5:00, heavyweight.

What to watch: The division now awaits a decision on the next championship pairing. Volkov's position holds pending that booking.
