What happened: Under head coach and offensive playcaller Brian Schottenheimer, the Dallas Cowboys have escalated their reliance on the passing game in his second season, per Ed Werder. Prior to Schottenheimer's arrival, the 11-year veteran quarterback had never reached the 600-attempt threshold in a single NFL campaign.

Why it matters: The pass-heavy volume comes with the 2-4 Cowboys on a two-game losing streak following a 23-13 defeat at the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 18. That run-pass split remains a central question after Ed Werder urged Schottenheimer to balance Dallas' pass-heavy offense.

By the numbers: Per ESPN (as of Sept. 29, 2026), Prescott completed 404 of 600 passes for 4,552 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions across 17 games in 2025. Drafted 135th overall in the fourth round out of Mississippi State in 2016, Prescott leads a Dallas squad currently sitting at the No. 12 seed.

What to watch: Dallas faces the Philadelphia Eagles next in a scheduled regular-season matchup currently sitting at 0-0.
