What happened: New Jersey completed the trade for Hellebuyck, sending Winnipeg forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, prospect Alexander Command and draft picks. Hellebuyck is a Hart Trophy winner and three-time Vezina Trophy winner.

Why it matters: The Sabres' stalled pursuit of Hellebuyck ends with Buffalo outbid by the Devils. GM Jarmo Kekalainen's most prominent goalie-market-adjacent swing last season, a deal for St. Louis defenseman Colton Parayko, collapsed when Parayko invoked his no-trade clause.

By the numbers: Hellebuyck is paid $8 million a season for four more seasons after this one.

What to watch: Kekalainen has said he trusts his current Buffalo group, leaving the Sabres' goaltending plan unchanged for now.
