What happened: The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right-handed relief pitcher Edwin Diaz on the injured list with neck inflammation. In a corresponding transaction, the club recalled right-hander Emmet Sheehan.

Why it matters: The neck issue marks another disruption for Diaz during the first season of his three-year, $69 million contract. He missed more than three months following elbow surgery in April and only returned to action in late July. The roster move removes a struggling reliever from the Los Angeles bullpen.

By the numbers: Diaz has posted an 11.85 ERA and four blown saves across his 13.2 innings this season. The Dodgers own a 73-49 record and are yielding 3.9 runs per game.

What to watch: Diaz is expected to undergo further testing in Los Angeles to determine his availability. Sheehan joins the active roster for the Dodgers' scheduled game against the Colorado Rockies.
