ESPN's Barnwell pitches 49ers-Colts nose tackle trade over DeForest Buckner reunion

Halton's two-game sack streak reduces pass-rush urgency

What happened: ESPN's Bill Barnwell proposed a trade sending a 33-year-old Indianapolis Colts nose tackle owed $8.2 million in remaining cash to the undefeated San Francisco 49ers. Rather than pursuing a reunion with former 49ers first-round trade piece DeForest Buckner, the proposal targets an expiring run-stopping contract while Osa Odighizuwa and rookie Gracen Halton handle penetrating duties. Barnwell also floated a separate deadline deal sending a kicker to the Los Angeles Rams.

Why it matters: San Francisco sits atop the NFC without a loss and created salary cap flexibility through prior restructures, leaving room for Indianapolis to absorb part of the $8.2 million payout in exchange for a higher draft selection. With 2025 second-round pick Alfred Collins placed on injured reserve on Sept. 10, the 49ers have relied on quickness in five-down fronts rather than traditional space-eaters. Bolstering the interior run defense before the postseason remains a priority for one of the league's oldest cores after playing mostly from ahead during the regular season.

By the numbers: San Francisco ranks 27th in run-defense success rate in 2026 per ESPN, while Sumer Sports places the unit 16th overall and 16th against running backs, and RBSDM ranks it 14th. 10, 2026, and the proposed 33-year-old nose tackle carries $8.2 million in remaining 2026 cash.

What to watch: San Francisco has until the Nov. 10 trade deadline to decide whether to commit draft capital and cash to a traditional nose tackle or maintain its current rotation. Having already ruled out a major wide receiver acquisition, the front office remains focused on defensive line depth for the playoff push.
