What happened: An ex-NFL defensive tackle said Cleveland is actively seeking a trade partner for one of its quarterbacks, with Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel at the center of the speculation. Cleveland later placed Gabriel on injured reserve with a designation to return and set Sanders as its backup.

Why it matters: The IR move removes Gabriel from the active 53-man roster for at least four games. Sanders' backup assignment gives Cleveland an immediate reason to retain him as the 2026 season opens.

What to watch: Watch whether Cleveland fields offers before Week 1 or carries its current quarterback structure into the opener.
