What happened: Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez publicly credited José Mourinho for raising the club's competitiveness during his tenure, noting that the period was followed by six Champions League titles in ten years. The remark, relayed by Fabrizio Romano, lands amid widely reported direct contacts between Real Madrid and Mourinho about a potential return to the bench.

Why it matters: Pérez rarely speaks warmly about former managers without intent, and the timing aligns with reporting that Mourinho-to-Madrid talks have entered advanced stages. The comment frames a possible reunion as continuity with the club's most decorated European era, softening ground with a fanbase split on the move. It also pressures Benfica, who reportedly want Mourinho to stay, by signaling Madrid's seriousness.

What to watch: Watch for follow-up reporting from Romano on whether direct contacts convert into a formal agreement, and for any Benfica statement on Mourinho's status. Pérez's tone in subsequent public appearances will indicate whether this was a trial balloon or a precursor to an announcement.
