What happened: Veteran NHL forward and former Sabre Marcus Johansson has signed with Färjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League. The 35-year-old opted to return to his native Sweden rather than explore North American free agency.

Why it matters: The move brings an end to a 16-year NHL career that included a 60-game stint in Buffalo. Johansson's departure removes a productive middle-six option from the impending free agent market.

What to watch: Watch for NHL teams seeking forward depth to adjust their offseason targets.
