What happened: Formula 1 will add Rwanda to its calendar as the African Grand Prix in the early 2030s under a 10-year agreement. The FIA said the championship will race in Africa for the first time since 1993. Formula 1 confirmed the long-term pact alongside the FIA announcement.

Why it matters: The move ends a three-decade absence from Africa and restores a fourth continent to the rotation. A decade-long term gives teams and promoters a stable planning window for travel, contracts and development. It also positions Rwanda as F1's anchor event in the region into the 2040s.

By the numbers: Last Formula 1 race in Africa: 1993, more than 30 years before the planned Rwanda debut. Agreement length: 10 years starting in the early 2030s.

What to watch: Watch for a confirmed debut year and circuit homologation details. Calendar placement and support events will follow from F1.
