What happened: Rwanda agreed a 10-year deal with Formula 1 to stage the African Grand Prix starting in the early 2030s. The race will run on a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, 25 miles south of Kigali beside the new international airport. The layout was drawn by Alex Wurz to use Rwanda's elevation changes for a fast, flowing test.

Why it matters: It ends a three-decade absence dating to South Africa in 1993 and puts the championship on every inhabited continent. F1 sees untapped reach among more than 100 million fans across Africa. Rwanda frames the Bugesera project around jobs, tourism, skills and long-term regional business.

By the numbers: 10-year agreement; start early 2030s; gap since last African race 33 years (1993-2026); circuit site 25 miles south of Kigali; F1 season capped at 24 races.

What to watch: F1 still must slot the event into the calendar around Rwanda's March-May rains. Track construction moves ahead under Tilke, DAR and WurzDesign.
