What happened: San Diego Padres hitter Gavin Sheets is playing through a plantar plate tear. He recently spent time in a walking boot and was previously unsure if he would be able to return this year. He ultimately made it back to the active lineup for the playoffs.

Why it matters: His availability provides a necessary bat for San Diego during a critical National League Division Series run. Managing the foot issue will be an ongoing factor as the postseason continues.

What to watch: His mobility and usage will be closely monitored throughout the series.
