What happened: The New York Giants plan to start J.J. McCarthy at quarterback Sunday against the Houston Texans, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The move follows McCarthy's relief work, including his first Giants touchdown pass Sunday.

Why it matters: McCarthy pressed his case in a close loss to the Saints that left the staff weighing a change. The call shifts New York from Jameis Winston, who opened with Jake Haener elevated behind him.

What to watch: Sunday against Houston now sets up as his first start, with final confirmation due before kickoff.
