What happened: Hamilton signed forward Robby Fabbri, 30, and forward Antonio Stranges, 24, to professional tryout contracts on Friday. Fabbri has played 463 NHL games since 2015-16, including 21 last season: 15 with the St. Louis Blues and six with the Minnesota Wild, scoring 2 goals and 5 points. Stranges, a fourth-round pick of the Dallas Stars in 2020, has played 208 AHL games, all with the Texas Stars, and had 14 goals and 34 points in 70 games last season.

Why it matters: The Hammers are 3-8-2 in their inaugural season and are dealing with injuries, including one to forward Cole Eiserman. Mitchell Chaffee, who initially led the team in scoring, has spent most of the past month in the NHL.

By the numbers: Fabbri: 463 NHL games, 3 goals and 8 points in 9 career AHL games. Stranges: 18 goals and 43 points in 55 AHL games the year before last, 18 AHL playoff games.

What to watch: Both players are on tryouts, so any longer-term deal would depend on how they perform in Hamilton's lineup.
